We are delighted to announce the first Leeds Balint study day at the Leeds Metropole Hotel. The theme for this year’s study day is, “Balint groups across the professions.”

It is well-known that Balint groups were initially developed for General Practitioners; to help them better understand the doctor-patient relationship and the psychological symptoms that were often hidden within the physical. During the 1990s, Balint groups started to pick up momentum within psychiatry and became firmly rooted within the speciality due to their pivotal place in the Royal College of Psychiatrists training curriculum.

More recently specialities outside of medicine such as the psychotherapies and non-health related professions, e.g. law, teaching, clergy, have understood the value of exploring the emotional component of the practitioner-client relationship within the Balint group model leading to groups commencing in these respective fields.

For this year’s Leeds event we will hear about these Balint groups and the breadth of how they are used across the professions.

We will start with a brief introduction to groups from various disciplines and a subsequent conversation between the group leaders. The introductory talk and discussion will be followed by participation in Balint groups with time and space for discussion.

As part of the event, we will also be hosting our Balint Society Annual General Meeting. The day will end with a drinks reception.

We hope you will be able to join us for this fascinating event in the vibrant city of Leeds.

The following groups are offered.

  • Ordinary Balint group: for individuals with experience or no experience of Balint, or for the more experienced leaders wishing to attend an ordinary group.
  • Leaders group: for individuals wishing to learn more about leadership or who are already on the accreditation pathway.
  • Supervision group: for accredited leaders if there is adequate interest and numbers.

This day counts as 6 hours of continuous personal development
